Hi - We had a user who created a single file that contained data for 3 different figures in his journal   We wanted to upload 3 different files with separate file names for each figure.   This is blocked by dataverse, because it won't allow duplicate file.   It looks like it's a feature, not a bug.   What is the reason behind blocking files with different file names, for our situation?   Thanks! - Mark

Documenting the "why" was also brought up at https://github.com/IQSS/dataverse/issues/2955 and that issue links to a lot of related discussion but it's closed so perhaps we need a fresh one.

Philip - I read the thread that you mentioned, and your response to Sherry Lake was:

Duplicate file detection is a feature that was developed in #357 and if it was designed in a suboptimal way it might be worth looking at that issue for the reasoning behind the feature.

So I looked at #357, and in it, landreev said:

"files that are duplicate by content, i.e. same md5: the Add Files page will display a warning and the matching md5s will be highlighted. So the user gets a chance to delete the duplicates (through the delete checkboxes) or cancel the deposit altogether."

I gather that this feature never made it into the code? Or was it shot down in another thread, that I haven't found?

In any event, I just discovered the method that allows creating duplicate files, with differently file names. I really should have tried all the possible methods of uploading files, before bothering to post my question. Sorry about that! - Mark

Mark,

I am still interested in the upload of different filenames with the same content. How did you do it? Your response aludded you were successful?
