Hi everyone,

Is there any documentation for the supported / unsupported file types and formats for Dataverse?

I saw that there is a guide for supported tabular file formats for ingest and some general info for accepted data types, I wonder if there is a list of file formats that Dataverse doesn't support.

Thanks,
Jack

Hi Jack,

That's answered at the top of your second link -- there are no unsupported/supported file formats: "Harvard Dataverse Repository supports any data format regardless of file extension."

There are file formats for which specific functionality is available: Tabular ingest (see the link you posted, though I don't believe the version numbers of the software are current -- e.g. RData files from R v4.x are supported.
Previewers are more complicated and I don't think there's a full list anywhere -- there's also a fair amount of configuration that goes into this (e.g. Harvard Dataverse is configured to preview .do files and .R files as text files -- which they are -- but doesn't do that for .py files, though they're in the exact same category).

Al best,
Sebastian

Thanks Sebastian,

Then is there a place to configure limitation for the format of the file uploaded?

We encountered a user who attempts to upload code (.py) to our Repository and it returns an error message (dataset.message.addFiles.Failure) saying "Failed to add files to dataset..."

Hi Jack,

Can you reproduce that "unable to add a .py file" problem on https://demo.dataverse.org ?

Thanks,

Phil

Hi Phil,

There was no problem uploading python script on https://demo.dataverse.org/. However, it keeps loading in our Dataverse installation.

I checked our Bundle.properties and found a configuration for the failed upload message (dataset.message.addFiles.Failure). I couldn't locate where this parameter is passed to in the Harvard Dataverse documentation to see how it is triggered in other scripts.
Is there a configuration file to include all unaccepted files for a Dataverse installation (v.5.10.1)?

That looks like it triggers your virus scan (Kaspersky) -- that'd be plausible for a script.

You could turn that off, obviously (though probably don't want to), or you can likely whitelist specific files or even entire file types in Kaspersky, but that's a Kaspersky, not a Dataverse setting.
