Sometime seagate heads appear to be a good match but dont work.
If the patient wont initialize enough to read the preamp
then I rely on
model #
internal sticker
first 3 letters of the serial number

sometimes this still doesnt work.

So before I swap I test the donor candidate by attaching the patients board and testing spinup.
I listen to how the heads behave.

If its a mismatch
then the heads do long sweeps from inner to outer inner to outer
without stops in between.

If its a match then the heads make stops and recalibrating noises.
Since the SA doesnt match then its not going to be readable.

My question is there a chance that this can corrupt the patients ROM?

Once I hear it making recalibrating noises I usually power off  - so that cant happen.

but on a recent drive it surprised me by getting DRD DSC and stopping like it was ready with 0 MB

I have a st2000lm rosewood a5 that was reading great on 3 out of 4 heads.
But now it just spins up and sits no clicking nothing...
with these messages
can anybody decode this ?

I think you are on a wrong line of informations

do you have PC-3000 or DFL?

With PC-3000 you read the ROM and you can do the read of the preamp in two manners
1. nice button, read ROM info. It will output a log where you have a sharp row 'Preamp Type' , beware it is written with bytes inverted
2. old manual mode. It requires to change the phisycal head map and save the modified ROM copy then compare the two files . This is needed with DFL
3. we don't have MRT so I don't know which of the two methods above you will follow with MRT

Though this is not really the final step.

This allows to go to your donors manager software and locate suitable donors from your donors stock.

Then it is always needed a refine , installing the patient board on the donor to listen which is the one that makes the better initial recalibration

I have pc3000 de 7.8 mrt deepspar

can you determine preamp by just the rom on a rosewood ?

I think there is a way but the pc3k doesnt show it.

You need to get drive ready
unlock FW
and ^L in terminal

older seagates do show the preamp in rom

What is you way ?

Hi

When you read ROM via boot code you have icon on right side of window (in PC3k) where when you press get all information about ROM file and in between Preamp type value.

I have yet to see pc3k provide preamp details from ROM on rosewood style drives.

Agreed. I believe the preamp information is compressed or similar.

I have done a comprehensive check

opened all the following ROMs

family 8C 1 and 2 TB
family A5 1 and 2 TB
family AE 1 and 2 TB
family AF 1 and 2 TB

in the respective logs output by the 'Show Informations' button

You find always

Preamp type.............. : 0000

but only in three of the ROMs

AE 1TB
AF 1TB
AF 2TB

the remaining five aren't showing the preamp string

though there is one point to say, we never check the preamp type on Rosewoods

We find the closest one by family and even not, and we do the straight test of patient board on donor drive

and we never (never) found one not compatible at the first attemp

Regards

Roberto

On Rosewoods we always match the numbering/lettering that is physically printed on the head/PCB connector.

I just checked a few Rosewood ROMs. The SAP in my examples was not compressed.

I think it depends on the age.

Matching the label on the heads connector isn't guaranteeing that you have high adaptives compatibility

for seagates, when testing the patient board on the donor you verify both

Several times we had matching preamp and the patient that was booting unstable or either clicking

It is a long time now we do this quick check and it works with best results

Hmmm. We have found, specifically with Rosewoods, matching the printed preamp works well. But I am sure there are lots of other methods.

" Hmmm. We have found, specifically with Rosewoods, matching the printed preamp works well. But I am sure there are lots of other methods. "

this is pretty restrictive and , believe me, it limits so much yourselves Rosewoood's donors availability for the respective specific cases

but yes, I agree with you, available methods are a bunch and each one sticks with the one found more comfortable for him/her self daily routine :-)))

Recupero;

1)Do you let it go all the way to DRD,DSC?
Or do you stop as soon as you hear the head making stops.

2) what are the signs of best match.?

3) how do you describe poor, weak match?

4) do you do any other tests - like reading from sa?

Thanks!

If you read my previous messages

you understand the the main gola is to absolutely DON'T POWER ON  the patient

that is the reason to find the donor from labels and , in our case, the much quicker test of installing the patient board on the donor drive

At that point you simply listen its recalibration sound/noises. It usually do a quick recalibration = perfcet, use it, suddenly it takes longer = unstable = far adaptives = use another donor,  It can click (never seen with rosewoods using the donor with same board number and also even with not matching board number) this would confirm = not compatible at all
