to datarecoveryce.
I have a wd40ndzw
rebuilt with new heads
immediately read the 190and did areas copies.

at some point the drive decided to make a new empty 190
I loaded the backup and got a WRONG HEADER message and errors parsing the 190
I wrote it back  but when you repower the drive cleans it up to zeros again.

I see that DFL-DE has some magic repair tool....
Anybody have it?
Does it work?
Can anybody try to fix this?

Thanks will pay consulting for the assist.

image.png

I also made 190_areas copies that it said were good of h0 and h1
but I dont see any way in pc3k of using the areas copies
I try to open with t2_analyze but also gets bad header error..

Can the heads write successfully to the SA?

Your T2 header is reporting the IDEMA capacity of a 5TB model.

What capacity is reported in the T2 header of the zeroed module (that the drive creates)?

Thats interesting observation

Rebuilt with new heads - sounds great.
wrote unlock rom to OG USB board.
Booted drive via USB and backed up resources.
Have good copy of 190
read it multiple times as area reading and whole modules.
We started copying files but it was really slow.
We wanted better control so we added sata adapter to USB board.
But must have damaged the original USB board because it would spin up then back down.
So we transplanted rom and CPU to USB C board from a wd40nmzw..
It sounds great and we have good SA access.
Heads 0 and 1 wont write.
And now translator is zeros.
I think that I can read user files but need to load 190 into ram.

I tried t2 recovery and load in the t2_areas reading module but the program doesnt like it - says header problem.

This drive originally had 8 heads
I had 1 8 head donor that we rebuilt it with but it would not write
but it was reading ok

Then the translator went to all zeros at some point. So we put in matching set of heads from a 10 head 5 platter drive wd40nmzw
Wasnt sure if it would work but it seems to read SA ok and now I can write H0
the usb-c board is also from wd40 so not sure where its getting 5 tb numbers from.

this is after drive repairs the 190

this is what I get when I try to open a saved good orig 190

==== this one is opening a 190 areas saved

I may be showing my ignorance, but doesn't this suggest that someone has imported a 190h module from a 5TB donor?

I'll double check the logs and date stamps.
The first thing we did was write unlocked rom to the og USB board
Then new head s
It came ready and then went straight to bu 190
And resources.
I have multiple copies
All do the same thing

We read 300gb before it deteriorated.

This is the T2 header from a 4TB resource dump:

Offset(h) 00   02   04   06   08   0A   0C   0E

03271000  3F00 0000 6000 0000 ACFF FE00 0000 0000
03271010  B0BE C0D1 0100 0000 D617 383A FFFF 0000
03271020  1E00 0000 13FB 0000 1DF9 0000 21F9 0000
03271030  1400 0401 8000 0000 F601 0000 12FB 0000
03271040  653A 0000 0000 0000 0008 0000 0347 0700
03271050  0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000

The capacity is 4TB (0x1D1C0BEB0).

This header is located in the middle of the 190h module.

IIUC, the data section begins at a relative offset of 0x60 (absolute offset 0x3271060) and has a size of 0xFEFFAC bytes. This means that there is a lot of extra data at the end of the module. This extra data has the same format as the T2 data, and it appears to be a logical continuation of it. Therefore I'm wondering whether module 190h is built for a 5TB user area, although only 4TB is in use.

I have attached a screenshot of the end of the T2 data area. Each line is 260 bytes long and corresponds to one node.

(These are only observations -- I may have interpreted the header info incorrectly.)

I think my observation is probably a red herring.

The node count in all your 190h modules is 64275 (0xFB13). This same count appears in the header of my 4TB example. Therefore, it would appear that your T2 header is in fact a 4TB header, except that the capacity is wrong. I suspect that the firmware ignores this incorrect capacity and treats the drive as a 4TB model, but PC3K doesn't like it.

That makes sense.
I wonder if I can hack the value to be a value that the PC 3000 would be happy with
That would allow me to force the translator into RAM and start reading data again

Thanks for your insights
ACE said to try their rebuild tool.

I wonder if this dolphin-de editor tool works.

Does anybody in our group have it ?

If you want to stick with the original 190h module, just edit both capacity parameters in the T2 header. I can do this in 2 minutes with a hex editor, so I imagine that PC$10K can do likewise.

All your dumps have 4TB T2 headers. Some files have 14 of them.
