Seagate Heads Needed

Good evening. I have a Seagate ST2000DM006 with an SN of Z560HLS4 that needs a head replacement. It has three platters but uses the top side of the lower platter, both sides of the middle platter and the bottom side of the top platter. I opened a couple of my drives but they only have two platters. I have been trying to find a donor based on the second and third characters of the serial number but there is nothing out there. I am thinking I could probably get it to work if I could find a drive with three platters and six heads. Does this make sense? If so, does anybody know a part number?

Thanks.

The Seagate platter count is written in the P/N, not in the model number.

In particular for the Grenada, you don't even need the P/N - the top cover shape is enough to determine whether it's 2 or 3 platters without opening the drive.

Forgot

But you firstly need to read the preamp type since they can implement 3 different types

and matching the minimum heads amount without matching the preamp type won't work

I received a 3TB drive and there are six heads so that is good. Unfortunately, the donor drive has an LSI preamp and the patient drive has TI. Based on information provided on this forum in the past LSI and AG are compatible with each other while TI only works with TI. Has anybody used LSI or AG with TI and had success or should I just continue on trying to get TI? Is there any way of telling what preamp a drive has from its label?

Also, if I finally find a good match will the patient drive just recognize the original head map and ignore the two additional heads?

Thanks.

read preamp in ROM next time

and find the donor accordingly

then for adaptives make a final verification with patient board on the donor

LSI/TI etc are only relevant to Rosewoods.

Nick, I must have missed this last month. Just to clarify, on any Seagate drive other than a Rosewood the three different types of preamps are all interchangeable? A drive with an AG preamp can be put in a drive with a TI preamp with the expectation that it should work and won't cause any problems?

Its not Nick its Tim, but on older Seagates its best to match the preamp detailed in the ROM.

I have written him this on February the 17...

I'm not sure he reads carefully the hints

To match the preamp detailed in the ROM is that looking for 0A-0A-02-02-40-02-32-08-00-00 and then the two digits following are the preamp version?

Most times the PC3000 ROM readout will give you the preamp. Or use ctrl-l if its available.

I used Ctrl-l to get the readout from the donors but how can I tell from the drive with bad heads?

Donors are B8 65 and B7 04. Customer is 07 D2. Sounds like a bust.

You can try them and move the head adaptives which sometimes helps. But getting an exact match is the way to go.
