Good evening. I have a customer whose brother died and he wants to get into his computer to check out his emails for his estate. He doesn't know the password and Yahoo won't give him access without a court order so he would like to see if there is a way to get around the password or to figure it out. I know I used to have some software on a floppy disk that would let me boot in and get around the password but that was long ago. The computer is a Gateway (speaking of long ago) but he is not sure what operating system it is running. Any thoughts?

Thanks.

If it is a Windows OS, you can use this utility to reset the user password for Windows. As always, make a back up of the drive before attempting this.

If it's not an ATA password, then attach the drive to another machine and navigate it in File Explorer ???

“chntpw” is a easy to use Linux tool to remove all Windows OS passwords from XP to Win10 just make sure the drive is in a shutdown state not a sleep or hibernate state. You can get a bootdisk and easy prompts to follow or else Linux terminal commands.

pb - He wants to be able to get into the computer so he can hopefully have the password automatically come up for the Yahoo email account.

Juan - thanks, I will give that a shot.

PCUnlocker works great for clearing login passwords or changing from using a Microsoft account login to a Local account login (which may be required if he was using his Yahoo credentials for a MS account login).

Prior Win10 login passwords were less secure, if it's Windows XP then security was almost non-existent.
If you would like to KNOW the password you would need to bruteforce it from the hash.
There are many tools for that, for example
