According to my notes, the Apple Data Recovery Tools will ONLY work with 2016-2017 MacBook PRO 13” and 15” WITH Touchbar. I believe you have a 2016 with touchar. So, it sounds like it may work on this machine (especially since it powers on still). Happy to try it for you if you don't have it ($300 if it works).

Hi Brian,I purchased this kit second hand and tried it on this Mac but it doesn’t work, so I’m trying to assert if the kit is bad or it is the actual SSD that is gone.
I connected the kit but the SSD is not coming up, my concern about the kit is that when I connect everything up, the led on the little black box of the kit does not turning on at all, so not sure if it is supposed to be on in any case, or is it supposed to be on only when data is transferred and it can id the SSD on the faulty Mac?
What is your experience with these cases? Does this led supposed to be on as indication of power anyway? See the attached image for reference.
Also I disconnected only the battery from the mac logic board, do I need to disconnect anything else?
Thanks mate
Thanks Brian

Hard to know if it will work in this case, but it's worked about 80% of the time for me when the computer still turns on.--
