Does anyone know if it possible to fix or recover data from this MX500 drive.  I came into this morning and out computer that manages our user names for the LPR's was offline.  Drive appears to be bad.  When i plug it into FKT it see the drive but its all zeros. .

Drive was bought back in 2019 .  Just looking to get some data from it.   Its on windows 10 no bitlockerunnamed.jpg

What capacity does it show in BiOS or Device Manager?

Its only partially supported from a firmware standpoint, and all zero does point to translator failure.

It sounds like it is healthy, especially if it passes SMART, too.

Probably the data got wiped. Maybe a Windows update?

Could you try writing in one random byte toward the end and see if it is able to write? If it does successfully, then the translator works.

So, it would be difficult to tell what the issue would be.

Download a free demo version of something like R-Studio (if you don’t have it). Activate writing in settings, open in hex editor and write to the very last byte.

Crucial changed the controller in this model. Originally it was SM2258H, but later versions switched to SM2259.

You can identify the controller and NAND using CrystalDiskInfo:

It may be supported. The controllers firmware can be ‘adapted’ by the manufacturer so it all depends on what they have done (if anything). Someone with PC-3000 SSD can look at it for you. Petri is closest to you who was on the thread earlier.

Paul,

We can take a look at it if you would like. We offer a free diagnosis. We have PC3000 Portable Pro with the latest firmware updates, though honestly I am not sure we could help, as I suspect it is not a firmware issue.

We are in Massachusetts, so shipping to us with ground UPS or FedEx likely will arrive next business day.

Anyways, you could arrange for a free diagnosis on our website (see link in the footer).

Regards,
Petri

Petri, with the SM controller you can roll back the translator in PRO.

So if it is supported and has been zeroed out, there is hope.

Tim,

Thanks for the info.

I have not yet a chance to do that on an SSD (new feature?), so maybe you could take the job. May be more feasible.

Kindly,

I have not used it either. It was only launched on the last update and only works with SM controllers. So the number of cases you can try it on is limited.
