Hello!

I'm looking for historic maps of north Indian states (Punjab, PEPSU, Delhi, Bilaspur, and Himachal Pradesh) with tehsil boundaries from the 1951 Census of India (or another source from early 1950s, before the 1956 reorganisation of states). This 1955 India and Pakistan topographical map is really detailed but does not have tehsil boundaries.

A GIS shapefile is preferred but leads on high-res paper/digital maps and images are also welcome.

Thanks,
Rohit

So, for India it is highly unlikely that you will find digital shapefiles of tehsils of the 1950s, it is hard to even find the current ones( mostly because they change very often). Your best bet would be to look at the census hand books for approximate drawings and also because they freeze boundaries before a census. I think most of the 1951 census hand books are now accessible either at https://censusindia.gov.in/nada/index.php/home, https://archive.org/, maybe the GIPE digital library or maybe in the various state and national archives.

You might find more accurate data from the old Survey of India topographic maps available across the various universities in the U.S., U.K. and Australia, if any Indian University has them I am yet to see them online( this is a very sad state of affairs ). Even when available they tend to be of varying vintages and you are unlikely to find a vast swath of area from 1950-60. There is a collection on Zenodo for the old Survey of India maps by volunteers at https://zenodo.org/records/15028333 which you might find useful.
