Subject: Applications now OPEN: Data for Justice Challenge 🎉
To: Thejesh <i...@thejeshgn.com>

Dear Thejesh,

The applications for the Agami Data For Justice Challenge are now open!

The Challenge is drawing on a simple idea: researchers, journalists, civil society organizations, law firms and companies have invested significant time and resources in the creation of valuable datasets in the field of law and justice. What if they could share, build upon and collaborate on each other's datasets and tools? What if easy-to-use tools could enable the analysis and interoperability of diverse datasets? Basically, enable all of us to share, build upon and co-create datasets and tools to impact our systems of law and justice.

To make that happen, the Data for Justice Challenge is now inviting applications on two tracks:

  1. Create a Hub: In this track, we’re looking for entrepreneurs, technologists, universities, research centers, or others (individually or as a consortium), who can take on the task of creating a DataHub / GitHub equivalent for law and justice (“Hub”). Applicants should seek to combine technology with design that encourages users to share and co-create datasets.

  2. Create Datasets: The first few users of the Hub will define its success. In this track, researchers, civil society organizations, journalists can propose compelling and strategic data driven projects in law and justice and commit to sharing datasets on the Hub.

The Data for Justice Hub as we see it, will aid insightful data-driven projects, grow the community of active data users and spur a collaborative culture that improves our systems of law and justice.

This will be a two-stage application process. As Agami, we will curate the selection of teams who lead the creation of the Hub, and also offer strategic support for 6 months to the selected teams to get off the ground. A fund of INR 1 Crore has been earmarked for the launch of this Challenge. Last date for applications: August 10.

If you’d like to know more, or apply, head here. We’ll also be hosting a virtual townhall in the weeks to come to answer any questions applicants may have. Stay tuned for updates.

Looking forward to your continued participation (and kind support) and do share this opportunity ahead in your networks. Click here for a creative, should you like to use it.

Thank you.

Best,

Supriya

Interesting.

Would like to discuss with fellow datameeters to see collaboration.

We have done a project on gender based violence and the goal was to create a data portal for media to see which service providers, police station, and courts are responding, in responses to the cases.

With best
Atanu

Hello Datameet members,

My name is Rohini and I am a member of The Bachchao Project collective.

We have a licensed dataset of the permissions required by mobile phone safety apps: http://thebachchaoproject.org/evaluating-safety-buttons-on-mobile-devices.

The data was collected in early 2017 and has not been updated since. Most of the apps in the set are either run or endorsed by law enforcement departments in India as "women's safety apps". The rest are the most popular personal safety apps in India and abroad. (E.g: Circle of 6). This dataset was created as part of a pilot project on the efficacy and privacy concerns of mobile-phone safety applications in India. However, the project never took off, so we couldn't move to the phase of analysing it and writing our findings.

If you would like to make use of this dataset independently or while collaborating with us, please email me off this list.

For context, here is an article I wrote about safety apps: https://www.genderit.org/feminist-talk/womens-safety-there-app

Thanks and regards,
Rohini
