Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone had good ideas on how to get data on being exposed to more BJP propaganda or advertising during elections. Is there perhaps data on advertising expenditures by locality or distribution of important local headquarters that predict a higher exposure to propaganda from those that live nearby? Any ideas are welcome, thank you in advance!

Best,

Eduardo

You can get some rough numbers from https://adrindia.org/. Usually, these are declared by political parties (so multiply by a healthy N).

There are some interesting pointers in AMA by Sophie on r/india (https://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/oll01o/i_am_sophie_zhang_at_fb_i_worked_in_my_spare_time/). Not sure if this is directly relevant but you can try to reach out to her.

Hi Eduardo,

FB ad library could be useful for tracking FB specific spending.

Best,

Hi Eduardo,
Take a look at Whatsapp propaganda research by Soma Basu, and also by Kiran Garimella +co-authors. BJP public groups have location names eg BJP4Orissa, BJP4UP etc and whatsapp group data collected by researchers can throw up relative extent and intensity of propaganda. There are also circuitous ways to trace location from phone numbers from whatsapp groups used in research but I do not have details. There is limitation to availability of data for only public groups.
You may collect whatsapp data for upcoming elections by joining public groups as these researchers did.
There may not be direct figures of expenses as whatsapp is heavily used but has no disclosures of any kind related to political campaigning and spending. https://faq.whatsapp.com/general/security-and-privacy/about-whatsapp-and-elections/?lang=en

Facebook data, as suggested by others too, has location details though they do not provide raw data and historical data https://www.facebook.com/ads/archive/report/
Granular data is there only for a week so for 2019 polls, it may not be there now except in aggregated form. You could start now for UP polls and see details available(and not available) for location. I had old data from 2019 downloaded then, but need to locate it back again. FB data also has its own disclaimers and limitations.

Hope that helps!
