Hi All,

I'm starting to generate a few, what could be, useful shapefiles for Udaipur at the moment:

Area names shapefile (e.g. Ambamata, Pratap Nagar, Malla Tallai etc)
Ward map shapefile (Including population, literacy, etc)

At the moment these are only for personal use and use for analysis at the charity I'm helping out at. However I want to share them in case they're useful for someone else.

The problem is that for the area map I've just traced the areas returned by Google, so they're a) not 100% accurate, and b) taken from Google. So I'm wary if I share it, I'll be breaking some IP laws.

The ward map, was taken from an image of the ward map I found online. So, again, probably not 100% accurate, but it's good enough for my purpose.

What do I need to do here to make sure I don't get sued by anyone?

Many thanks,

Jim.

Hi Jim,

I haven't faced your specific problem but in the past I have worked with Google Earth data without having to worry about sharing constraints since the underlying maps were from public sources.

My sense is you're free to share the files since you're not technically sharing Google Map content itself and creation of Map layers and KML is within the permitted usage. The shape files you share would be useful for others wanting to use it as an additional layer with Google Maps. To be absolutely safe attribute Google?

Would be keen to hear others views on this.

Best,

Wonderful. Thanks for the tip! I'll have a trawl through the Google T&C's and see if I'm breaking any rules. Obviously I don't want to make any money out of these files so I'm happy to attribute to Google, no problems there.

The Nagar Nigam here in Udaipur had already agreed to give me a KML of the ward boundaries, but for reasons I won't go into here I can't take them up on their offer. However, if someone else wanted to request that data that would be great! In the meantime the file I've created solves my problems. I might put them in the GitHub with a heavy caveat of accuracy and terms and conditions that may need to be adhered to.
