Hi Tej,
I work with remote sensing data for urban growth.
For quickstart, I would suggest you to classify multi-temporal remote sensing images into simple classes such as built-up, vegetation, water etc.. Thereafter you can use MOLUSCE plugin within QGIS (FOSS) to estimate urban transitions and probabilities for urban sprawl.
