Hi folks,

The recently opened Gati Shakti portal has extremely valuable infrastructure-related information, with over 200 geospatial data layers integrated from more than 40 central ministries and state governments. These datasets can be broadly categorised into -

  • Demographic information: Shapefiles of administrative boundaries including subdistrict and village boundaries along with district and Taluka headquarters. Settlement, watershed, river, water body, all these layers are also included.

  • Physical Infrastructure: Detailed networks of Railways (tracks, stations, freight corridors), Roads (National Highways, expressways, toll plazas), Power (transmission lines, substations), Telecom (OFC networks, towers), and Shipping (ports, inland waterways).

  • Social & Economic Assets: Locations of Schools, Hospitals, and Anganwadis to identify service gaps, alongside economic zones like Industrial Parks, SEZs, and Textile Clusters.

  • Land & Environment: Critical regulatory layers including Forest Approvals, Wildlife Sanctuaries, Eco-Sensitive Zones, and Mining Leases to help check for land availability and potential clearance issues.

This information is quite interesting, but it looks like the platform is designed for visualisation and query-based analysis, allowing us to view layers on the map and see attribute details. However, we are unable to download any of the geospatial data in a machine readable format.

We wanted to know -

  1. Has anyone accessed and used the Gati Shakti portal?

    1. How did they download the raw machine-readable geospatial data from the portal?

  2. Is there an open source repository for any of the data on Gati Shakti?

Any pointers, links, or documentation would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Supriya

Dear Santosh,
Can you please elaborate more on the use of rest services to get the shapefiles of the items.
Gati Shakti is serving the maps using WMS is what I could understand.

The website comes a close second to IRCTC in ease of registration and password setting( had to resort to looking at the regex in the source for password validation ).

Anyway.. once logged in the wms url is https://ugi.pmgatishakti.gov.in/ugi-public-api-3/gis/wms99 . unfortunately not easily scrapable( not impossible ). Needs a bearer token, and in a first the payload to the wms endpoint is encrypted.

Most of the layers there can be seen on other government websites.. still some interesting layers around. NCOG and their levels of paranoia are unparalleled.

Even I had tried intercepting data but so weird and lost the track, and best to talk less about the cartography. Not sure, is that data so confidential that raw data should not be made available??

While most countries focuses on ideas and data being openly available via api, we are still locking up data and expecting innovation !

Sorry for sounding harsh but that’s reality.

The Bearer token was probably a red herring.. and Claude found the public key for the WMS encoding( which is different from the one used for the other calls ).. though I haven't asked it to consolidate the code to be reproducible yet. For now, data is being pulled.. what has already been pulled can be seen at https://indianopenmaps.fly.dev/vectors?categories=gatishakti
