Dear all

I am currently working on a research project that could really benefit from accessing village-level data on livestock ownership. I am aware that the government conducts livestock census every few years, but the publicly available datasets only seem to reveal information at the district level.

I wanted to inquire whether members of this group are aware of/have accessed data that provided a more granular description of cattle ownership in India? I would be really grateful for leads on this front.

Thanks
Vastav

Hi Vastav

There is a household level survey carried out by the NCAER since 1982 known as the Rural Economic and Demographic Survey (REDS) which includes a lot of variables on livestock. There are 3 waves of the data set in which I could find these variables: 1982, 1999, and 2006. The latest 2014 round does not contain any variables on livestock. Please bear in mind that this is data set includes sample data (not census) from around 230 villages in India.

You can access the 1982 and 1999 data here:

You can see the 2006 documentation here:

If you want the 2006 data then you will need to get an Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval from your current organization and send it to Andrew Foster at Brown University. On receipt of the IRB approval he will send you the data. That data will also contain more readily usable versions of the 1982 and 1999 waves.

Apart from this, I am not aware of any data set that collects livestock data at a level that is more granular than the district level which is carried out by the NSS.

Thanks a lot, Shiv. I'll try contacting Prof. Foster to get access to REDS 2006 for my project. This was really helpful!
