Dear All,

good morning and hope all is well.

Anyone here has access to a shape file (or any GIS format) of the weather sub-divisions in India

For example

With best wishes,
Sarath

It looks like a grouping of districts, so should be possible to build up from https://github.com/datameet/maps/tree/master/Districts/Census_2011
In qgis, selecting the boundaries and dissolving them should do the trick.

Are these divisions specific to IMD or are they in use by other departments as well?

With best wishes,
Sarath

There are various ways that you can look at these zones.

If your outlook is targeted towards Agriculture, or ecology, then you should look into the Agro-climatic Zones. Various Research bodies define them differently: https://vikaspedia.in/agriculture/crop-production/weather-information/agro-climatic-zones-in-india

If you want to have the data match the IMD's Sub divisions (WHich are divided on an Administrative Basis, and no on any geographic bases) then you will need a Map like this: https://mausam.imd.gov.in/imd_latest/contents/index_rainfall_subdiv.php

Devdatta

Dear Arun,

good afternoon. These sub-divisions are specific to IMD (grouping of districts) not seen in use by other departments. Power sector has their 5 sub-divisions (north, south, west, east, and northeast) and agro-climate zones are different. The request is only to match the maps made by IMD.

With best wishes,
Sarath

Thanks to Sarath's thread about the weather zones, found myself discovering the pretty cool IMD data which gives so much live information, but its sadly fragmented over multiple pages and some clunky interfaces.

It would be pretty cool to get them all in a single view if it hasnt been done so already. Had a quick go at getting the cloud cover, radar and wind observations in a single map. Feel free to build on top if interested: https://observablehq.com/@planemad/india-weather-map

Interesting, after some digging, it looks like they do load a geojson of these divisions at runtime, but its not in the right projection. Maybe someone can help to fix this? https://mausam.imd.gov.in/imd_latest/contents/district_shapefiles/sd_boundary_rainfall.json

Hi Arun,

The Data seems to be in UTM 44N, i.e. EPSG:32644

Dear Arun and Devdutta,

good morning. Thank you for the messages. We (mostly, Nishadh) tried to extract from the IMD site and there was a projection issue. Attached is made from collating districts.

I received an email from IMD staff saying they are re-doing these sub-divisions for new districts and union territories, but not the shapefile.

with best wishes,

Managed to scrape the nowcast warning data from https://mausam.imd.gov.in/imd_latest/contents/stationwise-nowcast-warning.php

Live data is available as a CSV to download or a GeoJSON if you want to play with it on https://observablehq.com/@planemad/imd-india-weather-station-warnings
