Dear all,

I have been trying to locate the shape file for Cauvery river basin, but could not find it.
Can I get a quick guidance on where should I get it.

I am looking for the 'river streams + basin boundary files' similar to the attached image of Cauvery river basin which is available on India-WRIS portal.

I will be grateful for any help you can provide.

Hi Rahul,
The Disaster Services of BHUVAN has hydrology layers available. If you inspect the web-page, you will be able to find tiles with rivers and these tiles can be obtained by passing BBOX coordinates in the API. Together it will help you geo-reference the tiles as well. Wrote something recently that uses this service for obtaining flood data - https://medium.com/civicdatalab/tailoring-flood-images-baa169cc53d2 Similar process could be replicated for obtaining rivers.

Sai Krishna, that tutorial is fantastic and is an extremely valuable resource for others. Many thanks for producing it.
It's also an unfortunate commentary of what one needs to go through for accessing such important datasets. Curious if this data can be used under the Government Open Data license considering its available for free and not restricted as per NDSAP.

Hello Arun,

Thank you for your kind words. Very glad if it turns helpful. I'm assuming that the data can be used under GODL for the same reasons you mentioned. I've also been following a previous email thread on the group which is discussing a similar issue. Looking forward to expert opinion nevertheless.

The post also reminded me that some time ago it was possible to download vectors from some of the Bhuvan geoservers as a GeoRSS XML https://github.com/planemad/qgis-extract-html-attributes/issues/1#issue-790240586 .

I had scraped this data from India Wris, some years back.

Here is a link to the Kaveri Basin, in GeoJSON format: https://gist.github.com/devdattaT/40fbc09ae48402157d0984df6e9f2b02

Hi.,

Fantastic work of downloading and stitching together 13000 images to track and monitor floods.
Cannot understand why our governments make it so difficult and laborious to access public data for public good.

Great job and a nice blog....

Prabhakar
