Official Survey Of India - India Boundary

Hello All,

A week back @planemad[1] found India Boundary and State Boundary maps officially published by Survey of India.

You can find them on SOI website[2] available for download.

I have added the same to our maps repo[3] as shapefile. @planemad has converted them to geojson and are availabe under under Country folder[4] in the same repo.

The maps look great for most part[1]. I am yet to make a webpage for it so it can be seen on our projects website[5]. I will do that sometime this week.

I am really kicked about the possibilities.

And I forgot to mention: The SOI says

This Public Portal facilitates free access to accurate & authoritative GIS-ready spatial data to empower, inform & enrich every citizen<br>
• Free use of data for Consultative, Research and Education purposes
• Free access to various base maps viz Imagery, Hill Shade and Vector data
• Citizens can annotate over the autorotative basemap and download the work done for their use
• Citizens can download the approved boundary files for Consultative, Research and Education purposes

Which is quite liberal but it does not mention GoDL. Should we write to them asking them if its under GoDL?

Hello Thejesh,

It would be better to ask SOI to appoint Chief Data Officer in data.gov.in.

We need admin boundaries and political boundaries too in the proper license, which are very insensitive.

Admin Boundaries:- Districts,Taluk, Village
Political Boundaries:- Lokshaba Constituency, Assembly Constituency, Local Government Boundaries

Otherwise, we continue to scarp the websites.

Hello Thejesh,

Most of the spatial agencies don't have Cheif data Officier.

We need to write to each agency to appoint Cheif data Officier.

DST

Great. Idea. We can have a template and then can send a modified version to each agency.

I have a template that anyone can edit.

Hi,

Had a look.

Specifically wanted to check the Enclaves in the states boundary.

Some of them will requre some cleaning.

Like these Two Holes in MP should be a part of UP's Polygon but there are not.

I tried to check quality of geo-rectification of these new SOI publicly release boundaries. Seems like they fit Google Earth better than the ones from GADM (adm0, adm1, etc.). See screenshot for TN-Karnataka border on Cauvery. The GE and SOI boundaries match the Cauvery channel, which is indeed the inter-state boundary. Just posting for information.

Sorry, I should have clarified: the red boundary is SOI official release, the black one is GADM.

Checked the SOI state boundary (Red) with Bhuvan India Admin (1:250,000) WMS boundary(yellow) and google satellite WMS

Also Karnataka Polygon area with SOI map is 194054.22 sq.km, the official physical area is supposed to be 1,91,791 sq.km (could not get the official source) This is with the WGS 84, Pseudo-Mercator projection

So these are new boundaries to me (*at the international boundary level). These are the highest quality I have seen out of India. There are some bad spots, but this is amazing that this data has finally seen the light of day!

Hello,

was looking for the revised Boundaries after the J&K bifurcation.

It seems SOI APP is not supporting DOWNLOAD any longer.

Can someone check and confirm.May be I am making a mistake.

Hello,

There is good development on open spatial data.

CDOs of smart cities are asked to upload city boundary and wards boundary

Dehradun and Thanjavur have already shared boundaries in smartcity open data portal. (https://smartcities.data.gov.in/ )
