Dear Sir

Is there any difference between Stress Appraisal Theory and Transactional Theory of Stress? Please suggest any suitable references to substantiate the same.

Thanks & regards.

The 2 theories are different yet connected

Transactional Theory of Stress is the broader framework, and Stress Appraisal Theory is a core component inside it.

According to Transactional Theory of Stress (Lazarus & Folkman, 1984), stress is not in the event itself or the person alone, but in the transaction between the person and the environment. Stress occurs when perceived demands exceed perceived resources.

It includes three interlinked processes:
1. Cognitive appraisal (how you interpret the situation)
2. Coping (what you do about it)
3. Reappraisal (how your view changes over time)

Stress Appraisal Theory discusses one part of the transactional model: appraisal.
It explains how people evaluate a potential stressor.

Two main stages of appraisal
1. Primary appraisal: Is this irrelevant, benign, or stressful? If stressful: Harm/loss, Threat, Challenge
2. Secondary appraisal: What can I do about it? Do I have the resources, control, skills, or support?
