Hi again DI team,
I am attempting to make a box-without-whiskers plot with SanFran Weather data.

I wish to make a box-plot where the top of the rectangle represents max temp on that day; bottom of the rectangle represents min temp on that day; and black circle represents mean temp on that day.

Here's how I broke down my problem
  1. I've used only circles, and bound their y-value to mean temp, and the graph was made successfully.
  2. I've used only rectangles, and bound the top line segment's y-value to max temp, and the graph was made successfully. (Repeat for bottom line segment, and y-value to min temp.)
  3. When I try to use a rect and circle together, I bind the y-values of the rectangle to min and max temp sucuessfully. However, when I attempt to bind the y-position of the circle (while it's in a group with a rectangle), Data Illustrator sends me a warning: "To bind data to shape position, the collection layout needs to be broken. Continue?" Doing such, does not merge the new y-value scale with the y-value scale set up by the rectangles. The result is shown below.

So I guess I have two questions:
  • Is there something I'm doing wrong, or is this a problem? If it's my error, what am I not conceptually understanding about using bound data for y-position of shapes?
  • In a some-what-common hack, I'm using the circle (made up of four segments and points) as a singular point. But I tried using the pen tool to create a single point, but it does not seem possible. In fact, paths drawn with the pen tool cannot have points added, removed, truncated or split in any way. Will either of these functionalities be added?

Best,
Patrick

Hi Patrick,
For your first question, I think it is a bug related to how groups work. For now before the bug is fixed, please avoid using groups, you should be able to still achieve the result you want without using groups. We're glad to help if you have questions about that.

For the second question, a path has to have at least two points. It is a great feature to add or remove points on a path, we will keep that in mind when we continue to add more features.

Thanks!
Leo
