Aaarrggh, why are we still building mostly 2.5 storey semi-detached housing?  Six storey blocks of flats and it could have _more_ communal green space and house 3x as many people. 

And those large "hardscaped" areas look guaranteed to be used for car storage...

A good point, plan on p4 has 2 "Footpath potential connection to future Cherwell Site (housing on adjacent fields)". So, for once they have considered permiability to neighbouring future developments, we just need to ensure they are also for cycle use. From the plans they look fairly open paths, and not a 3m tunnel between tall fences.

Cycle parking, "Cycle parking will be provided in accordance with Oxford City Council Parking Standards. Up to 2 spaces will be provided for dwellings with up to 2 bedrooms and 3 spaces will be provided for dwellings with 3 or more bedrooms". I would sat no cycle spaces should equal the no of bedrooms. If what they are offering meets City Council planning standards, probably not much we can do.

Car parking. "Parking will be provided in accordance with Oxford City Council Parking Standards, which are set out in the Local Plan. One allocated space will be provided per dwelling." Should be interesting! Hopefully a travel plan/package will be available for all interested viewings and purchasers, giving all the none motor optings, as they have been doing in Cambridge for years.

Need to ensure the entry over the cycle track is good (pictures have large kerb radii...).

And keep an eye on it as they do it. The cycle track entrance to the development in Kennington has just had 3 cyclists dismount signs within aprox 50m of each other, these signs didn't feature on the planning application drawings.

A slightly different perspective from this side. 

One cycle parking space per bedroom is a ridiculous correlation. One cycle parking space per bedspace is far more relevant.   However, that’s the standard City Planning have adopted.  But what has the police commissioner got to say about designing out crime?  The police don’t have a good reputation of solving bike crime (opposed to some recovery) so they should have some clout in preventing eBike crime.  Of course there is no standard for eBike parking. And obviously there needs to be one if eBikes are a solution to urban motoring. Whatever is provided for secure eBike parking (& charging) is likely to be good for a decent value commuting cycle. Cycles really should be parked in doors. 

Likewise there really should be better provision for pedestrians/ householders that walk.  A Place to remove and store boots and outdoor shoes. A cloak room/cupboard/ drying cupboard for wet weather clothing. And a downstairs shower to clean up / warm up after getting caught in rain or worse. 

Then one can still participate in the Great British Tradition of parading ones dirty togs & underwear to the kitchen and launder them all in a food preparation room:  Gross!  What’s wrong with that??  Perish the thought that new British homes in North Oxford would have a laundry room or even the laundry machine in the bathroom: just like other civilized countries. 

Outside the remit of cycling but imho an issue that the UK does badly is Waste materials storage, and insulation.  

Imagine if mortgage repayments included power bills for the next 25 years?  There would be a revolution in insulation if people knew what income & VAT they waste in energy bills. 

The two big costs in waste disposal are separation of materials and transport. Not a lot can be done on transport to the reprocessing plant if there’s not one nearby. But then again supermarkets aren’t close to farms. 

If waste is separated at source it has value. Typically #3 HDPP is worth c£1800 tonne. Compared to steel at c£80. So separating out the 8 different plastics is clearly more valuable than separating out 3 colours of glass.  But if space is not available, it can’t be done domestically and it just becomes contaminated trash. 

And do the new homes come with wormeries, compost bins or out-dated food caddies?

And is surface / rainwater stored for gardening, loo flushing or laundry washing? And an outside tap for cleaning the mountain bike after a good thrashing?

And to bring the topic right up to date with the UK Govt announcing a move away from gas fired central heating by 2035, one presumes the planned new housing will be air source heat pumps powered by solar or nuclear- in keeping with local atomic energy research industries?  

Thanks for the heads up. There’s a lot to play for in sustainable transport in Oxford , Oxfordshire.
