Hi All

See below for details of an invitation I have extended to all IBC councillors, SCC councillors and MPs Tom Hunt and Daniel Poulter. I’ve also invited Carl Ashton and Paul Horne from SCC.

I think this is worth a try. The worst thing that can happen is that nobody signs up, but nothing ventured, nothing gained!

All CI supporters obviously very welcome to attend too - email me your details if you’d like to join in the fun!

Subject: Encouraging cycling in Suffolk: invitation to a presentation

Dear Suffolk County Councillor

I am writing as a member of the Cycle Ipswich campaign group to invite you to a short presentation about the government’s ongoing campaign to encourage the UK to become a nation of active travellers, with particular emphasis on improving cycling infrastructure. As you will be aware, with ongoing restrictions on the capacity of public transport and research showing that coronavirus outcomes are worse for people in poor shape, now is most definitely the time to support those looking for alternatives to the single-occupancy car as a mode of transport.

Cycle Ipswich has been very encouraged by the positive steps that Suffolk County Council, as Highway Authority, has taken since the government’s funding announcement and we have been supporting council officers in their analysis and prioritisation of routes. However, as the next phase of work begins it is likely that the political pressures to change course will increase. My presentation will aim to explore why active travel matters, how to advocate for it, how to support the SCC officers in the vital work they are doing, and how to answer some of the most common complaints that are likely to be levelled against what the Council is trying to achieve.

Building a broad consensus will be crucial to the success of SCC’s plans. With that in mind I am extending this invitation to all Suffolk County and Ipswich Borough councillors, as well as to the Ipswich-based MPs Tom Hunt and Daniel Poulter.

I do hope that you will be able to join me on-line (via Zoom) for what I hope will be an entertaining, thought-provoking and engaging presentation and discussion. My plan is to host the presentation at 7:30pm on 23 September, but if sufficient people who want to attend are unable to attend then I will endeavour to arrange a further session too.

If you would like to attend please reply to this email and, nearer the time, I will send you an invitation to a Zoom meeting. If you are unavailable on 23 September but would like to attend an alternative session, please let me know your availability for the following week.

I look forward to hearing from you.
