HI everyone,

I'd like to attend a short course on participatory systems mapping and I just wondered if anyone could recommend a course or courses?

This one at Surrey looks interesting but seems out of date as there is covid notice on there...

Thanks

All the best,
Vyv

Hello Vyv,
If you would list your purpose/goal/ideal learning outcome for attending such a course, you will get better or more targeted recommendations.

Hi Jason

Thanks for your reply.

Higher priority.
-Demonstrate a critical understanding of the ideas behind systems mapping
-Build a map on my own
-Facilitate a group to build a map
-Be able to analyse and interpret maps

Lower priority
-Understand the definition of systems mapping and related approaches, the contexts in which it can be used and how it fits in relation to other social research methods and modelling approaches
-Be able to critically engage with existing research using this and similar methods
-Use a range of analysis methods which you can deploy on maps as appropriate
-Critically reflect on the approach, its strengths, weaknesses and value in different areas of social research, practice, and policy
-Reflect more broadly on the use and value of participatory modelling approaches

All the best,
Vyv

Hi Vyv,
I was trying to ask you what is the territory you wanted to do a map. Since there are many many ways to come up a map, from primitive caveman drawing on their walls telling people where the tiger is hiding to hunt them, all the way towards Google Maps today that helps you to go from point A to point B. Therefore, talking about map is always secondary to talking about your goals/purposes/intentions, and there are many many types of maps (mapping methodologies) exist in your toolbox. The "system map" you talk about might be just one of those tools, and I'm not sure if the members of CYBCOM are familiar with or interested in it. Thus my questions of clarifying your purpose.
For example, if you purpose is to find better methods to enable a group to work together more effectively and efficiently, I would recommend the WINTOP Roundtable Leadership training course. See the following two video clips, short one 2 minutes, longer one about half an hour:
Also if you like to post your thoughts to our Club of Remy as a Call for Discussants, we might be able to do a Zoom meeting if there are two more people interested in your topic.
Regards - Jason

Hi Vyv

Oslo Met have a course that is sometimes available to register for, around 'visualizing complexity': https://www.oslomet.no/en/study/tkd/visualizing-complexity - the approach would be based around the 'gigamapping' technique.

You might also get in touch with the systemic design association - https://systemic-design.org/ - they ran short sessions during last year comparing different approaches to systems mapping - and that group might be a good one to ask this question through.

Best wishes
Ben

Hi Jason

I am specifically interested in "participatory systems mapping" using the method described in Barbrook-Johnson and Penn (
https://link.springer.com/book/10.1007/978-3-031-01919-7). This is becoming widely used across public and private sectors in the UK. I am working a funded research project which starts next year - one of the other investigators chose this method. The project aims to map support services for autistic people.

This is why I used the term in my initial email - our misunderstanding is because in assumed the list would be knowledgable about this specific method.

I'm not looking for general advice about systems maps but it's always important to learn about the context of the work. This will come later.

Thanks for your replies and all the best
Vyv
