It’s a big party on our cruise ship, with many people dressed appropriately for the holidays. The ship captain, who is Greek and has two young sons on board, is going to lead us in Xmas carols at 8 pm.

Ben gets depressed this time of year, a combination of birthday, Xmas, and short days. I was trying to do something fun to get him out of his funk. So far so good.

I love group Christmas carols.  I spent the evening at the Morehead City First Presbyterian Church.  We sang “In the Bleak Midwinter.”

Margo,

I’m ecstatic when we reach January 2 and all the mess is over.  It also helps that the days start to get longer, even though very slowly at first.

Pope Julius I was very smart to create a “Christian holiday” to time with the Winter Solstice.

Paul, we had a lovely morning celebration with homemade banana bread, sausage biscuits, and hot coffee.  No little children as my youngest grandchild is a Junior in High School so everyone sleeps late.   Christmas has been taken over by the capitalist product hungry crowd who also ruined the college football.   I get your happiness at arriving to January 2, but I hate to tell you that then that crowd gets caught up in the Super Bowl.

I learned this week from a sermon that the innkeeper was not really an innkeeper but a person who had an extra place in his own house for visitors. (This is according to the Greek word that was translated to innkeeper but actually means a person who had extra space to share which was a thing at the time.) So it was an act of kindness to share the stable with the little family because his house was full.  The story is about people from elsewhere treated with hospitality and acceptance.  I wonder how this message has been so lost in our world today.

As I age, I am beginning to believe in purgatory.  It solves a lot of theological problems for me. This is said with a nod to my Catholic friends.  Then the Christmas story as written in Luke has a lot to offer us on how to treat others. Ben has always been a person who offers a kind and thoughtful gift of himself to the world and is worthy of our high regard.  He is a lovely man.  He knows how to treat others as do you.  Many happy thoughts and blessings to you both and to all the Cubs and Associate Cubs. Margo

We have all of our kids and their kids and their kids (the ones that can come) on Christmas Eve in the morning. Quite a spread Gayle and the girls put on.

Then there is a lot of ripping and tearing and just enjoying being together. We have six great grand kids, but only 2 of them made the party. One is just a week old.

Sang at two services later in the day with a party at my nephew's house in between. Gayle, of course, was on Altar Guild.

Christmas Day is fairly laid back. We go to church again - with NO responsibilities.

Then off to visit a couple of the kids and their families. Then home to our own fireplace (though it was 68 out.)

A very satisfying Christmas; now we are at the movies.

Raymond
