Standards Based Grading

Hi everyone,

We're looking at standards based grading and none of the examples we have for report cards are CS. I am wondering if anyone is doing SBG and would mind sharing what their assessment and reporting set up is like, for both middle school and AP CS

Hi Ruth,

I taught a middle school elective that I did SBG for, although I converted the standards grades to numerical and letter grades as well. The class was "Intro to text programming with Processing" and used the Khan academy Processing environment. All of the grading was based on 3 projects.

This folder has my grade book, the descriptions of the three projects as given to students, and an example of the feedback to students for each project. The 'project 3 graded' doc also included the end of course feedback. Student names have been redacted.

I also convert to a letter grade on report cards. But "not yet" grades can be changed.

We were looking at https://gradingforequity.org/ with the WMass CSTA group, and NJ and Andrea had some good examples. Maybe we should join forces and meet together sometime on standards based and equity based grading.

Agreed about wanting to talk more about standards based grading. While I haven’t done it in CS, I worked in a math department that converted to SBG a few years ago ans would be happy to work with people through the process again. Matt
