Gentlemen,

I'm testing the water here. I've been approached by a few people about this possibility: I have a meeting with the St. George City Parks and Recs Director this week about this tournament and hosting others long-term.

I should get better traction for a dedicated pitch than I had with the Senior Games, since I work with his wife. Here's the proposal:

Annual Old Boys (45+ or 50+) 3-team tourney over 1 – 2 days. We can call it “The Dumsummzabiches Tournament” or something like that.

6 matches total. Highest points wins the tourney. Alternate home field each year between the 3 teams.

Vegas Irish
Colorado CSOBs
St. George Old Boys Something-or-Another

I'm exploring whether we can put together a viable St. George / Cedar City / Mesquite Old Boys team.
Here’s my flyer (gotta love ChatGpt!):

I like it Jeff!  Why only 3 teams?

Best,

That was just how the conversation started.  The problem is scheduling bigger given the number of larger events nationwide.

Plus, there’s a rumor circulating that Haggis wants to combine with a team down here on St. George, so probably should include them in this conversation.

Hello Jeffrey
These are strictly my personal thoughts
One of the gripes for Aspen Ruggerfest is that we play a game on Thursday and then against the same opponent in the finals on Sunday. People like to play more games, certainly when traveling.
So a minimum of three game (4 teams) tournament would trigger interest.
For a 45+/50+ tournament the CSOBs would likely join one of the younger Colorado Old Boys team. Like the Colorado Springs  GODS
The CSOBs would also have an interest inthe older brackets 55/60+
Keep us posted.
Have a nice day

Thanks, Paul.

I like this feedback. It's very helpful.  I want to create a tourney that's "of the old boys, by the old boys, and for the old boys."  Not to sound cliche.  But, truly, I don't want to be presumptuous so I am open to all ideas to make something you want.  Phil Klevorick said the same thing.  I am due to meet with the city parks and rec guy in an hour.  I'll have a better idea of what we're looking at.

Cheers!

Hellp Jeffrey
Have you considered the Golden Oldies colored shorts option? Where special rules count for age gifted player with certain colored shorts. This would make the age brackets a little easier to manage.

Have a nice day

CSOBs would love to get back to St. George.
Terrific hosts & great location.
6 teams would be great. All depends on date, etc.
Keep us in the loop.
Cheers.

I spoke with Haggis and they can send a motley crew down if we can get this together.  They would want a 40+ tourney as opposed to a 50+ just on their numbers.

One lesson observed from the Huntsman Games is that, if this is supposed to be a social tournament, you need to emphasize that or have a separate bracket for the all-star teams.  We had a great time at Huntsman and played serious competitive matches, but the ORBS, Connecticut, and the Old Breed A-side were a level above the club level that the rest of us were playing.  No one wants to play in a match or watch a match that ends up 70-0.

That message was heard loud and clear.  We're looking at a social tournament.  More fun!
