For anyone interested, an unusual plasma flow between the two major parts of the sunspot group, around 11:30 on 11 April 2025, largely gone by half one.

Hi James

I agree with Kevin – that’s an amazing image. Great work for capturing it so clearly and your timing was spot on! Am I right in thinking ta the plasma flow would be arcing out from the sun’s surface?

Best wishes

Tim/Kevin

Thanks very much for your comments.

I don't know what the loop is.  AI told me it was an active area of the Sun!

Prominences show up in profile on the edge of the sun and filaments are the same thing, seen as lines from above.  They don't seem to be particularly associated with sunspots.  Prominences form when magnetic fields form loops above the Sun's surface taking gas with them.

Groups of sunspots have various magnetic classifications, generally with opposite polarity across the group, which would transport gas from one sunspot to another.

A pure guess is that my photo shows an unusually large and isolated gas flow between opposite polarity sunspots. The loop shape is similar to magnetic field lines along the side of a bar magnet, like this, but why just one large visible one has formed is a mystery.  A possible but rare event like Monkeys, typewriters and Shakespeare perhaps.
