Hi neighbors, we have seen a coyote three days in a row now, including in the middle of the day, on either campus dr or Parnassus just wandering around on the road. Be careful with your pets and young children. The coyotes are not just out at dawn or dusk.

Thanks for the heads up. We.were told by Berkeley animal control that they cant be moved. They have a den below Campus Drive near the end of the street

They suggested use of an air horn (easy to get from a marine supply store. We've used it a couple times --.Definitely makes them scatter!

A really beautiful animal has sauntered his/her way across our back yard while we were relaxing on our deck.  Hunting squirrels, we think...

The neighborhood dogs have been good about notifying us when coyotes are near.  In particular, Mattheus and Daniela’s dog got vocal one day shortly after Zeke did, and I ran outside and chased off the coyote.

Of course dogs bark at other things too, but it’s one way to stay alert!

Yes, I called a few months ago, and they said “coyotes (2 syllables) gonna coyote”

Mostly harmless and scared of people, but take care with small pets and children

Yes, coyotes are not a comfortable cohabitant for humans and our pets.  And they are multiplying well all through the hills of the East Bay.

We carry a small airhorn on the trails at all times and have one at the house.   We have been advised to have a variety of loud noise makers available to sound off when you see them around.   Air horns, Pet Corrector (sounds like 1000 snakes hissing), a few cans full of spare change that you can’t spend any where these days…… these will discourage coyotes from lingering in our neighborhood.  Our dog Luja is a flock guardian with instinct to chase and attack coyotes among other flock predators and you may have seen her occasionally down near the ravine that drops from Campus to the Labs below as well as the canyon that drops from Parnassas down to the west side of the Labs.    We do our best to keep her from this pursuit because it takes a pack of Pyrs or Tatra’s to run off a pack of coyotes !   But she is something of a deterrent.  Still, apologies for her migrations as she will challenge our GPS electric fence from time to time.

The other advice re coyotes and neighborhoods is to not leave food of any kind outside. Like dog or cat food.

But what happens if you are walking your dog, who is afraid of loud noises, and so rushes the coyote because, if their human made that noise, then they must need protecting?  Sigh.  Such a complicated situation…. Appreciate everyone’s notifications and thoughts!

Wednesday update: at least two coyotes on Olympus hike.  Not as timid as usual.

Thanks for the heads-up! .. That.. and the skunks, mountain lions, deer, foxes, raccoons, possums, turkeys, and squirrels,—as well as ourselves and our pets,  trying to live together and survive this beautiful area.   Thanks for the notifications and stories. . . JB

Hi All,

I learned about a UC research project on trends in human-coyote interactions, called Coyote Cacher: https://ucanr.edu/site/coyote-cacher

You can report local coyote encounters to the researchers here: https://geodata.ucanr.edu/coyoteCacher/form/

You can also view a map of reported encounters and sign up for encounter alerts at the bottom of the main cacher page, which can be helpful for being informed about level 2 or level 3 encounters (the more concerning ones like bites or on-leash attacks).

Best,
Jen
