Hello neighbors! I'm coordinating a community effort to make vent cleaning services more affordable. We've already got two households on board and need just a few more to make it happen. If interested, please send me a private message with your contact info, and I'll help connect you with the service provider.

Seth, Luke, do we really want SPAM like this on our flying message board?

In the last 10 days or so two people (Mark Eslick and Donna M. Helton) joined the list and both have posted (spammed) the list with air duct related crap. Both provided a half credible reason for wanting to join the group but neither have posted anything relevant to the group. I can easily revoke their posting rights but I'd prefer if someone part of the CPC hierarchy asked for this to happen.

One of the problems with the process of people joining the list is it's hard to validate their intentions up front. Genuine candidates sometimes fail to provide a reason or fail to mention anything to do with paragliding or aviation in the reason. Spammers can (and just have) provided a good reason. So my general approach has been to give people the benefit of the doubt because they can be effectively kicked out if they turn out to be bad actors. But if someone provides no reason / justification at all to refuse their request and then they almost always reapply with a reason.

Regards, Douglas

Often groups send out a welcome email. That is a good place to provide ground rules on list, such as it's purpose and what won't be tolerated in posts. I'd ban those two for sure if I was the list owner or moderator. Your point about what people provide as reason to join is certainly valid. But there's plenty of bad actors out there 😔

Go away and leave us alone, you unpleasant jerk of a person. I wouldn't use no matter what the price.

With AI, spammers are autogenerating half-reasonable reasons to join lists.

I strongly recommend sending a message _back_ to potential joiners asking for further information before adding them.

I admin an email list for my neighborhood and have seen a flood of 'people' (bots) claiming to be in the neighborhood providing half-reasonable reasons to join.

My standard action now is to respond and ask for an address.

Most bots do not reply.

One did (easy enough with GenAI) and provided a non-existent address on my street.

Those two people are very likely bots, please remove!
