Making no headway

Hi everyone.

I have an older model of the scanner that was a gift.  It was never used until now. 

I have assembled the device as per the animation and checked the video as well to confirm that the setup I had done was the same.

Got it assembled, but have had absolutely no luck in getting it operational.

Setting up

1. Downloaded the clone drivers onto the system as well as the Horus application from the CT-Eng website.

2. Had to download the Logitech software in order to get the camera to work.

I turn on the scanner with a power bar  for the shield power brick, and the light blinked on an off, so i turned off the power bar.

I attempted to connect the USB for the board into the computer, and it recognized once (Port4), and then connected the camera cable to the computer (no issues there).

I ran the Horus application to see if I could connect to the unit as it stood, and it did.

I was able to run through the initial setup for it, both the camera and the lasers worked.

I exited the software and then disconnected all of the cables.

I turned the power bar back on and the LED strip blinked on and off again.  I removed the Stepper motor driver chip, and the lights stayed on (steady)

I tried to connect the unit again, and the port would not come up in the computer.

I bought a new Stepper driver chip, and it fried immediately (12 seconds after turning it on).

I took that out and tried to connect to the scanner again with no luck.

I disconnected the Shield from the Arduino, and attempted to connect to the computer to see if the port would come up, but no luck.

I am at a complete loss  as to what to do now, and I'd appreciate some thoughts and suggestions as to what to do now.

So, it worked fine the first time you used it, then you removed the driver and it has since not worked? Was there a reason for pulling that driver chip? When you put the new chip in was all power turned off and unplugged to the unit and the driver chip pointing in the correct orientation as marked on the the PCB with the pot facing down? If so, I can't see why the driver would have fried again. 

That being said, you should be able to connect the arduino itself to the software irrespective of the shield or driver. Do you have any experience with arduino IDE, where you could connect and see if the board is working fine? 

The software can be finnicky about connecting to the board sometimes, but as long as the little green or red light is blinking on the arduino board when plugged in it is probably in OK shape. Sometimes installing an older version of Horus can solve the annoying buggy connectivity issues.

Thanks for the response.

I have not had the unit working.  The Driver chip was dead when I put it together.  Without the a4988 chip, I can run through the configuration wizard for the lasers and the camera and that is about it.

I have not attempted to change the version of Horus.  Current is 0.2cr1, so I'll have to check that out.

When changing the chip, "Yes" all power was off on the unit.  I hope I got the chip in correctly....  As per the instructions the voltage regulator is at the top (pointing up upon installation) and the Heat Sink is at the bottom (so to speak, or facing down).  The Arduino board lights up (*solid RED LED's), but it does not connect a new port (used to show up as port 4).  I press the reset bottom on the board, and the right LED blinks a few times and then goes solid RED again.  My system does not recognize the board.  No ports added to the system when the board is connected (Arduino).  I took the Arduino out of the scanner and attempted to run the Arduino IDE tool, I cannot get the board to connect.

The scanner has not functioned at all since I got it, like above I had the lasers come on and the Camera work, but the Stepper motor has never worked, probably due to the chip not working.

I have no idea why the chip fried as soon as I put it into the unit?  All wiring is as described in the instructions.  When I have the power brick connected to the unit, the LED's (white strip) come on and stay on as long as there is no chip in the board.  If I have the original chip in the cowtech shield, disconnected from the Arduino, the LED strip stays on.  When I connect it back into the Arduino board, I get the "on" light on the Arduino and the "L" light is no longer lit.  When I connect the USB, the "L" light blinks once then goes out.  If I remove the A4988 chip, then the "L" light stays on, but it still does not "create a coms port" on the system.

So that is where I am at.  I can provide pictures if you want them ,or any other information that you feel will be useful.
