Gene and Christopher,

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but that means, "to pay in kind" as in paying with something besides money.  That's what the owner of the super near where I used to have my upstairs office, (you know the one which eventually sold out to that big chain,) used to offer widows and single mothers for paying off their past due grocery tabs when they didn't have enough money. Of course, the "in kind" was understood to be sexual favors...  A pretty good deal really, even if a bit scummy by the store owner.  If we didn't live in such a prudish world, we'd probably see a lot more of that.  Of course pagar en specie could also mean paying back the favor by baking an apple pie.  That's what my wife does. jejeje.

Hi Christopher,

Yes, on both counts.  Gene and I both live on the same volcano in Guanacaste, gracias a Dios!  However be aware that Gene speaks in an even stranger tongue: back bayou Cajun.  So when he says "there is always a breeze of freshness" my Cajun translator tells me he's talking about pe'os (less pachuco: pedos.)  jajaja.  Language-wise, I parachuted in to el campo Guanacaste and until we had a little one interested in English, I've been living in a household full of Ticas who don't speak English.  Most of our farm/ranch/dairy community speaks very little if any English as well, so for me that "love for the language" is sort of a survival skill.  ;-)

As always, you language input es muy apreciado.
