(= alba) dawn ⧫ daybreak
de madrugada in the small hours
levantarse de madrugada to get up early or at the crack of dawn
a las cuatro de la madrugada at four o’clock in the morning ⧫ at four a.m.

madrugar

INTRANSITIVE VERB
1.  (= levantarse temprano)
(una vez) to get up early ⧫ get up at the crack of dawn
(por costumbre) to be an early riser
▪ proverb: a quien madruga, Dios le ayuda the early bird catches the worm
▪ proverb: no por mucho madrugar amanece más temprano time will take its course
2.  (= anticiparse) to be quick off the mark
3.  (= precipitarse) to jump the gun
TRANSITIVE VERB
madrugar a algn (= adelantarse) to get in ahead of sb; (Central America) (= matar) to bump sb off (informal)

  • A quien madruga, Dios le ayuda.
    literally, "God helps those who get up early."
    equivalent to, "The early bird catches the worm."

  • ¡Nadie llama a una puerta a las 3 de la madrugada!
    Nobody knocks on a door at 3:00 in the morning!

  • "El que madruga, come pechuga." Similar to, "el que es más vivo se lleva el pescado fresco."
    "He who gets up early, gets to eat the [chicken] breast." and "The one who is more alive takes the fresh fish."

  • Apague esa luz mi hija, que mañana tiene que madrugar.
    Lights out, kid.  You have to get up early tomorrow.

Here are two funny dichos based on the verb madrugar.

 

“El que madruga, encuentra todo cerrado.” He who gets up with the birds finds everything closed.

 

“El que madruga, para el mediodia, tiene sueño.” He who gets up early is sleepy by mid-day.
