Hey folks,

Two of my dogs need to be transported from Sarapiqui to Santa Ana but they are very large. We can only fit one in the back of the pickup cabin. They get very nervous if they are detached from each other, so I need to bring the other in the truck bed.

Does anyone know where I can get a cage or some kind of comfortable transporter for the back of a pickup, either or buy used or to rent n Sarapiqui?

The pickup is a Toyota Tundra, the dogs are full sized Irish Wolfhounds, slightly bigger than Great Danes. We have a transporter that fits a full sized Labrador but it's too small for either of these dogs.

Thanks!

Ken

Hi Ken,

It might be cheaper to get a horse trailer!

We just carried our 55 kg Cane Corsi on our laps and tried to keep her head out of the steering wheel and not out of the windows..

Perhaps you could make some suitable dog crates out of wood or tubing for inside the bed of the truck?  Or maybe you could get a structure welded up fairly reasonably that would fit in the stake holes in your pickup bed to form the top of a bed-sized cage -- like a camper shell but with malla.  I do see plenty of company trucks zoomin' about with enclosed camper shells.  Perhaps the read deal is available or can be made?  Some of the rain-proof beds I've seen are just a metal camper shell like structure and a tough canvas-like cloth cover.  Like an enclosed bimini or dodger on a boat.

The largest pet crate I've got is about 1.2 m x 70 cm x 70 cm.  Way too small for your giants...  We have 5 quail in that crate right now laying 3 eggs a day.

Certainly a long shot, but perhaps you could find a used penitentiary truck with a good cage on the back?  A true perrero truck?  jajaja

I don't suppose they are chill enough to just hang out in the shade of a tent pitched in the bed of your truck or a toldo from a veggie seller truck?

I think I'd be tempted to cram them both inside somehow.  A cozy family is a happy family!  ;-)

Perhaps a taxi carga with a good backend suitable for beast transport?

Sam,

Your wisdom knows no bounds!

The welding option might actually work.  It definitely has to be completely closed. They get distracted and give chase very easily. There is a very particular facial expression you can see when a bystander is about to shit themselves. I don't fancy chasing after either of them in Braulio Carrillo.

Thanks for the suggestion. I shall make haste.

Ken
