y mi medio grano de arena: Another word for candle is la candela.  I think this is more the longer, table-type candle, while la vela is generally the church-style smaller, devotional candle.  joe

The only one I ever hear is "vela" as in wake, as in before taking that last ride to el Panteón... If it is for anyone we know, we at least do the cursory, drop by and chat for a bit.  For close friends and family, we likely will do the all night vigil thing.  All night vigils can actually be a bit of fun after the seriousness of the subject at hand wears off.  For many/most of the all-nighters it will become a good ole swap gossip party.  Death draws us together and there are stories to tell...
