Van Buren Bridge Ribbon Cutting
Event planned at Riverfront Commemorative Park on May 6
The new Van Buren Bridge carries OR 34 traffic from Corvallis into Linn County toward I-5.
CORVALLIS — A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Van Buren Bridge is scheduled for Wednesday, May 6, to mark a key milestone in the project.
The event will take place at 10 a.m. at Riverfront Commemorative Park, NW 1st Street, in Corvallis. Community members are welcome to join local partners in recognizing improvements to safety and accessibility.
The Van Buren Bridge project improves safety and mobility for people driving, walking, rolling and biking, and strengthens the bridge’s ability to withstand a major earthquake. A few finishing touches, such as landscaping, will continue as conditions allow.
Travelers should expect increased activity in the area that morning. Parking near the park will be limited due to the event and the Wednesday Market. People are encouraged to carpool, use public transportation or walk if they plan to be nearby.
Following the ceremony, attendees will have an opportunity to walk the new multiuse path across the bridge. ODOT will also host an informational booth at the Wednesday Market for those who want to learn more about the project and other work in the area.
For more information about the project, visit the project webpage.

The path on the Corvallis (west) side is quite usable already.
The fences came off recently. I haven't looked at the pathway on
the Linn County side for quite some weeks.
The priorities of the state highway department and the contractor
are apparent.

FYI, ODOT says the path under the bridge won’t be completed in time for the open house but will be open soon!

Western Friend is learning and sharing ideas for new attenders in Quaker meetings and those who care about them. If you have a good way to welcome newcomers to Friends Meetings, let us know here. It might be a flyer inviting someone to come to worship, a good book about Quakers, an online glossary of Quakerese, or the curriculum for a class about your Meeting or about Quakers. On a winter morning in Minneapolis, neighbors gathered outside a church while federal agents worked nearby. They were not there as paid organizers or campaign staff. They came to be present, to be visible, to make sure no one disappeared without witnesses. Steam rising from paper cups into the cold air. That is what Solidarity looked like in Gdansk. That is what it looks like now. It isn't coordinated by a central committee or led from above; it is built from the ground—neighbor by neighbor, block by block.
Power can dominate institutions. It can flood the zone. It can control the narrative. But it cannot easily defeat people who recognize one another and refuse to disperse. That is the beginning of every democratic turning point.
