Hi!
I am unable to use the annotation tool on a particular site. The image is able to load fine when in view mode but when I try to use the annotation tool, the image disappears and only the annotation points are visible. I am still able to type in the box, but no image appears.
Kind regards,
Isa

Hi Isa,

I can look into it - could you give me the name of the source and name of the image? Or a couple of examples if there are multiple affected images.

Hi Stephen,

I'll let Isa follow up with some more information, but the source name is micro_combined, and my understanding is that Isa is having trouble with all of the images from our Pohnpei sites, which are images that have the prefix "PNI"

Best,
Katie

Hi Katie,

OK - I checked a couple of the PNI images and am not seeing the problem yet. I'd be interested to know (if either of you can answer): 1) is everyone on your team getting the same issue or just Isa, and 2) what internet browser is the issue being encountered on?

Hi Stephen,

Thanks for the help! Only Isa is having the problem, the rest of the team is able to open those images just fine. I'm not sure which browser she is using- Isa, can you please let us know?

Best,
Katie

Hi Stephen and Katie,

I use google chrome for coralNet. I have also tried using safari and it was the same thing.

Hi Isa,

OK hmm, a couple more questions:
1) On the image view page, if you click the "View full image" button, are you able to see that fine?
2) Just to double check, could you point me to a specific image that you're having the issue with?

Hi Stephen,
I am able to see the full image when I click the “view full image" button. I seem to have a problem with all the images when I try to click the annotation tool.

Hi Isa,
OK good, that helps to narrow things down. So it's likely something with how the annotation tool is loaded generally, rather than about the image data. Some things you can try:

1) Try disabling any Google Chrome extensions you may have, and then reload the annotation tool. See if that makes the issue go away. It's possible that some extensions would block scripts that are required to load the tool, for example.
2) If you can think of any Google Chrome settings related to blocking scripts or other functions, check that as well.
3) Try a different browser, like Firefox (which we also support), and see if you get the same issue.
4) Try loading the annotation tool while your browser's Javascript console is open, and see what error messages show up in the console, if any. To open the console on Chrome, press Command + Option + J.

Hi Stephen,

Just wanted to follow up on this conversation- we have found that the problem Isa was having with loading the annotation tool has been occurring with other users when they try to annotate images using an iPad. These users were all previously successful in using an iPad to annotate images, but a few months ago it stopped working for them. Do you have any ideas why this may be?

Thank you!

Best,
Katie

Hi Katie,

Thanks for the follow-up and additional info! I don't have an iPad or other iOS device handy myself, but I will investigate the issue using an iOS emulator when I get the chance. Can't make promises on how soon, but I'll update you here when I've got any developments.

Until then, it sounds like the workaround would be to use a different device if at all possible. If that's particularly inconvenient for your group, let me know and I'll see if I can make this a higher priority.

Fyi. I replicated the issue on my iPhone and safari. For a couple PNI images the image is very briefly displayed in the annotation tool with points overlaid and then the image disappears and points stay.

Since.I never tried the tool from an iPhone, I checked A randomly selected image from another source and it displayed ok.

Thanks for looking into it David - so it's likely on any iOS device and only certain images are affected. One wild-guess off the top of my head is it's something to do with presence/absence of an EXIF orientation tag in the image, but I'll have to investigate to confirm.
