That's a nice looking boat. I like the wooden toerails and wooden window trim.

We're slowly working through the project of our Compass Easterly 30 - cleaning up the internal furnishing and now giving Dandaloo her first deck and topside paint in a looooong time.

Circe looks stunning in the photos and these are excellent motivation for what we're in the middle of - and by the look of it some inspiration for future work.

I really like the way the reefing lines and jammers have been fitted to the deck, running though that hole in the ridge where the spray hood used to attach (is there a proper name for that bit of the boat?)

And any recommendation on suppliers for bimini?

Cheers,

Mark (Compass Easterly 30 - Dandaloo III)

Mark, good to (meet) you and see a pic of Dandeloo.  Nice looking boats; these Easterly 30's.  You are boat 416 on the Register. Not bad for boats that have been out of production for over 40 years.  By my observation, we have lost very few yachts over the time.  The largest cause of damage seems to have been fresh water leaks coming through the deck to provide an environment for rot to grow.  These leaks seem to be mostly associated with rain water tracking inside via electric wiring.  The absolute worst was a home completed C29 that required 75 mm cut off the bottom of all bulkheads to restore structural strength.
There was an E30 with the same problem, sold dirt-cheap and was a fairly simple repair, though the new owner was afraid of losing the temporarily stayed rig while motoring home!
In the old days, wooden boats had deck plugs at each end that  were opened after sailing so that owners/boat keepers could put a salt block on the top of the top stringer, so that any deck leak-water became salty and killed mould spore.

Useless stoneage information until you have unexplained rot in a bulkhead

Wow! Very impressive sailing. You see a Compass under full sail and wonder how people get excited about "modern boats"?

Looks good even from below 43 degrees south!

Well done.

Thanks!  The teak is some work to keep up but worth it, I think.

Thanks.  The Easterly is a lot of boat - I think when Compass hand laid the hull in NZ in the early 70s they didn’t understand how strong fibreglass is.  So it’s hull is 3x as thick as it probably should be.  The boat is heavy for its size but very sea worthy.  And it looks great when painted.

I rejigged all the lines to run back to the cockpit which is much safer in heavy weather/off shore.  Roland Schmidmaier did all that for me plus the Selden retractable bowsprit for the asymmetrical spinnaker.  He is great.

John Penfold did the Bimini, sails and sail bag.  I highly recommend him.
