Hi all;

I'm considering installing a diesel heater in my C28, and would appreciate hearing from anyone who has done so (or in a C29).  Noise level is one issue that might put me off as there are no bulkheads to acoustically isolate the heater from the cabin. Apart from that, the impression I get from reading many users' posts on various forums is overwhelmingly positive if the installation is done correctly.

Cheers, Graeme

I have one of these, loosely located on the floor or the quarterberth, and the one inch flue goes out the hatch, and thus allowing lots of fresh air to enter also. The sound it makes is quite reasonable, no more than a domestic airconditioner.
You can see and listen for yourself Graeme, just 7 km away from you.

I think  Allan H fitted one for his trip round Tasmania. Look it up in this group.

I have just completed replacing the 5KW unit with a 2KW unit. I put the heater behind the engine firewall with heater outlet to the starboard quarter berth thru’ the lazarette.

I can’t hear anything. The out let is 100 deg. with unit set at 15 deg.

The exhaust goes to port side about 500mm in front of the transom (beside the manual bilge pump outlet) up high with a goose neck bend.

I wrapped the exhaust with 2 layers of titanium heat resistant wrap.

I had to replace the glo plug as the heater would not start up.

The 5KW unit was way too hot even on setting 1. On 5 I was in Darwin.

And you must install a CO2 monitor – I used the Quell 10LLDCO, from Bunnings I think it was.

I spent another $300 on Australian Standards fuel line, valve, exhaust line, clamps, insulation, exhaust wrap & fed from main diesel tank.

I wrapped the heating outlet with 13mm thick Armaflex tubing.

Do not use the muffler inside as it leaks.

Actually I have not wrapped the very end of the exhaust yet. Will have to get some when I reach Sydney. None around here.

Yes, Lockie came around and saw the heater in action, but it was worthwhile to use the heater on the yacht during some pre-winter maintenance this week. The forecast was 3 degrees at night, and maximum 16 and sunny during the day - perfect for some painting after the timber warmed up outside.
This is the self-contained heater in a 'suitcase' style, as I posted above. It needs 12 volts to run the blower fan, and the electronics of pump, temperature control and cooling-down cycle. It also needs an exhaust tube, or you could put the heater in the cockpit and vent the warm air inside. That would be quieter. About a third of the noise was the exhaust /chimney, and 2/3 was the blower.
While heating up the cabin, at heat setting 3 or 6, I would describe it as at the level of a 'vigorous' conversation. Or TV level, for people slightly deaf. It was not overbearing, and I turned down the heat level to 1, after about 20 minutes. The cabin reached 22 degrees, and 25 degrees (2 occasions tested) after about 20 minutes operation, whence I turned down the heat setting to 1 for a few minutes before turning it off.
The 'installation' is a work-in-process. I am undecided whether to leave the heater on the cabin floor, or on the quarter berth. The chimney is hot and exposed, but if not going outside at night, it was OK. I used 1" aluminium tubing. At the top of the chimney, I used stainless steel wool pads to shield/buffer the heat of the tube from the companionway plastic hatch and sliding roof. Obviously, I need to develop this a bit better, and more permanently as I use the heater. I raised the heater above the ground with timber because my bending of the exhaust tube was not tight/compact enough.

This video and photos are mainly to show you the noise level and one person's incomplete installation.

The video at 17.8 MB is too big.
