Getting a bike weld repaired locally

Hi all - 

A weld on my bike broke apart, it attaches a mounting plate for a kickstand to the bottom of my frame. Any recommendations for a local welder or shop who could fix it? The frame is 7000 series aluminum alloy.

I've worked with Full Auto on some miscellaneous fab and weld jobs for work (non automotive). They're really nice and were happy to help. Not sure if your job is big enough to be worth it, but you could give them a call.

Just a safety note. Aluminum frames are heat treated after they are welded at the factory. Welding an ‘aftermarket’ repair would ruin the strength given by the heat treat in the area of the weld. Depending on what area is being welded, that could cause your frame to be unsafe to ride. You might just look into a bolt-on kickstand as a replacement. I would highly recommend reaching out to the frame manufacturer or a reputable frame builder to see what their recommendations are before proceeding.

Agreed. You should not attempt to have an aluminum frame welded!

Thanks all!  I've now read about aluminum frames a little and yes it sounds risky to the frame integrity to redo this particular weld. I'll contact the manufacturer for advice and I have an idea for a bolt-on mechanical fix that I'll explore.

A pretty famous frame builder, Matt Assenmacher, now has his shop in Flint. I think he is done with building and repairing, but his opinion could be invaluable, especially if a mechanical fix is workable
