Read the obit from Union College where Peter taught most of his life.

Jack,
Thank you for sending this link.
Peter was extraordinary and brilliant, and I would also add “a friend”.  True, by SJ standards, a bit of an outlier, but I believe he honestly pursued precious human values and his metaphysical insights as he saw them.
RIP
Kevin

Jack,

Thanks for sending this. Wow!  Peter H died four months ago and we hear now.  The warmth, the depth and the raging reason of a once-fellow-Jesuit whose intellect and gift with languages still remains unbelievable to an intellectual jock like me.

I have one of Peter's books, signed by him, somewhere in my den. We once got into a brief correspondence.  He came across as the epitome of the world's greatest intellectual high wire act, salted with satire, raging against the unanswerable and the outrageous in religion and scripture and life with a reason one would think would consume a lesser being.

God rest his great soul!
Gerry

Hi Jack -

Thanks for forwarding Pete’s obit.

I didn’t really know Peter personally but I certainly knew of him. At St. Andrew’s, we sometimes got stories about incoming Primi before they arrived. The story about Brother Heinegg was that there was this brilliant, witty guy coming in who, in high school, had a competition with friends to see who could get the most letters to the editor published in newspapers, and Peter won, hands down. His moniker was “Disgusted Mother”.

The other Jack

Jack, thank you. Peter was a gas! I will try to elaborate later.      Dave

Thanks for the Peter Heinig orbit.  Teacher of the year award, of course, to the Jesuit connected is the highest accolade of all, even better than "saint", which, of course, Peter would find insulting, tho not for the same reason Dorothy Day did.  Just two remembrances here:  At one of our st. andrew's thursday picnics, Peter said we were all to be "intellectuals"; I had never heard the term before.. Second, didn't I read somewhere that Peter always brought his dog to class??? Or am I barking down my advanced octogenarian alley?  Blessings to all.. May Peter not be having an argument with God. I wouldn't bet on w(W)ho would win that one.   pax, jim

I am getting quite a chuckle reading your memories of Pete’s.Gerry, I can see your word “outlier” but I also can think of Peter as the quintessential post-Jesuit. I am proud to have played on a team that included an allAmerican, or , in Peter’s case, an allWorld!     Dave

Off the “hoary / hairy” but intriguing and warm subject, here is a “Jesuitica” photo for the ages.

Another wispy memory over 60 years old: whenever, in conversation, Peter or anyone else said something clever, or smart, or outrageous, Peter would. laugh out loud or broadly smile. He loved using his mind. That Disgusted Mother……!      Dave

Dave, I too chuckled at Kevin’s judging Peter “a bit of an outlier”. That was Kevin, not me. I followed Kevin’s piece with Peter with my own Peter “raging against the unanswerable. . .” with satire, etc. I wonder if the atheist credo book Peter signed and sent me has silently self-destructed which is why I can’t find it now. Some of Peter Heinegg’s satirical spiritual gifts are found in my youngest son named Peter too.

A few summers ago my Peter was working in the county clerk’s office when I, then a human service contract administrator and better known county union president, passed by the Plaza Gazebo at  lunchtime. My son Peter was surprisingly lecturing to a dozen of his fellow summer workers on the pitfalls of taking scripture literally. (I’d never seen anyone lecturing on that gazebo.)
I stopped and had to comment with a smile , “You’re listening to this guy?”
Peter laughed and told those who didn’t know, “That’s my dad.” So they laughed, too.
And, I, of course, moved on, baffled and amazed at my own Peter, who is always full of surprises. (FYI he graduated from St Peter Prep and Loyola Marymount) His latest surprise: He attended the Prep Hall of Fame dinner with some school buddies last week and privately questioned a retired admiral about the 60 Minutes UFO story and—in the interchange—Peter guessed right who the main suspect was—Israel, not Russia.
