I was wondering if anyone out there has any recommendations for waterproof cameras?

Thank you for any guidance you might be able to give!

Hey Christina,

Waterproof cameras fall into a few different categories: Weather-sealed, waterproof with a case, and fully waterproof

Weather-sealed camera: Cameras that when paired with a weather-sealed lens, are fine in all weather be it rain or snow but are not made for use in water.
Some examples include the 5d, 7d, and 1d series from canon, d800 and similar from Nikon, and the Fujifilm X-T series.

Waterproof with a case: these cameras need a hard or soft case to seal the camera against water. These can range from rather cheap and affordable options, like the GoPro action cameras and cases, to fully custom builds capable of housing DSLRs and cinema cameras.

Fully Waterproof: No cases needed here, these are fully waterproof. Often these cameras will be rated at various depths and may offer additional lights to allow for better pictures underwater. Some to check out are the Ricoh WG series, Olympus Tough cameras, Panasonic FT30, or the Fujifilm XP140.

Last but not least depending on how waterproof you need your camera to be, you may be able to get by with your phone. Most flagship-level phones are waterproof to some degree, usually not meant for shooting under but won't be ruined by a random splash.

Hope that helps!

I was going to pose the same comment/question as Joel regarding how much waterproof is needed.  Latest iPhones are waterproof for rain/snow.

I purchased a fully waterproof camera a couple years ago I use for kayaking so I can lean in for that perfect shot and not have a sad "oops." It has been handy for really rainy/dirty times when I don't want to risk DSLR.  Olympus TG-5 has 25-100mm eq. optical zoom (f/2-4.9) and wifi so I can transfer to my phone for quick sharing.

If using in a lake, I highly recommend a floating strap for camera or phone.  https://www.amazon.com/Waterproof-Floating-Underwater-Panasonic-Fujifilm/dp/B00JTE50US/

There is definitely a difference between waterproof vs water-resistant when looking for products that can withstand the elements.
When you are looking at items, look for IPX specifications for the product. These indicate standards based testing for dust and water ingress.

Joel did a great job. I sell cameras and keep up with technology. I also teach photography. Joel went over this subject very well.

Thank you all!

This is for someone who wants to do some snorkeling, so waterproof is definitely the way we need to go.

I appreciate everyone's input.  It has been very helpful!
