My walking group walked a few miles along the High Line Canal toward Star K Park (Aurora) on Friday, along with a pre-walk on Wednesday, and while I wasn't officially birding, we saw a few nice things. Just south of Hinkley High School in a mini-wetland, a Cooper's or Sharp-Shinned Hawk flew fast and low overhead (perhaps to the nearby feeders) and a Say's Phoebe was hunting insects in the grass.
We also saw three Bald Eagles -- a fourth-year in a tree behind Laredo Elementary School, and the pair near the Morrison Nature Center at Star K Ranch that was building their nest during the Christmas Bird Count on Jan. 1. Alas, the pair was together in a different tree, and the nature center staff told us that for another year, they didn't have any eggs hatch. (And there was a healthy-looking coyote loping across the grass in the mist.)
