It was an excellent morning at Chatfield, with a nice number (42) of birds and diversity (14) of species, and OUR 105th SPECIES - A STUNNING ADULT MALE EVENING GROSBEAK.  OMG, what a head and bill!  We also caught our first of season Orange-crowned and Wilson's Warblers and Common Yellowthroat.  Here's the breakdown of the new birds:

Downy Woodpecker 1
House Wren 4
Ruby-crowned Kinglet1
Orange-crowned Warbler 1
Yellow-rumped Warbler, Myrtle 12
Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon's 11
Yellow-rumped Warbler, Intergrade 1
Common Yellowthroat 1
 Wilson's Warbler 1
Spotted Towhee 1
Green-tailed Towhee 1
Song Sparrow 2
Lincoln's Sparrow 2
White-crowned Sparrow, Gambel's 1
Brown-headed Cowbird 1
Evening Grosbeak 1

We will be banding mornings Tuesday through Sunday (closed on Mondays) through May 31.  Denver Audubon has scheduled one-hour time slots at 7:30, 8:30 and 9:30 for visitors on weekends; visit here to register.  (I believe many time slots are already sold out, so register soon if you would like to visit.)

Great to hear about the Evening Grosbeak. Perhaps connected to that occurrence somehow, I had 5 different flocks of Evening Grosbeaks flying and feeding near my Ken Caryl Valley home this morning, totalling over 50 birds. This is exceptional for Ken Caryl in May, and generally so to have multiple flocks here in one morning. Occasional singles or handfuls are more typical.
