As we move later into fall, migration slows way down, as most migratory species have passed through.  In addition to catching a few of those late migrants, we continue to catch some year-round residents as well as birds that will over-winter at Barr.  Some of the captures right now depend on luck - are our nets in locations where the birds that move in tight flocks during the day happen to decide to spend time.

Thursday our luck was bad, and we had what may be a record low day - we banded a total of three birds, all Dark-eyed Juncos (1 Slate-colored, 1 Oregon, 1 undetermined).

Today, Friday, our luck was better.   A flock of Juncos came through near the front nets early on, and then we got part of a flock of Yellow-rumped Warblers at one of our far out nets later in the morning.  We also caught our FOS (and possibly only) American Tree Sparrow.  Tony Leukering, who ran the banding station for many years a gazillion years ago, used to say that we had to stay open until the ATSPs arrived.  I guess we now can officially close on Sunday!

Here's the breakdown of today's 17 new birds:

Downy Woodpecker 1
Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon's 5
Yellow-rumped Warbler, Myrtle 4
American Tree Sparrow 1
Song Sparrow 1
Dark-eyed Junco, Slate-colored 2
Dark-eyed Junco, Oregon 3

We will take down the station after banding on Sunday.
