CoBirders, at 4:00 this afternoon a loose flock of about 25 Mississippi kites flew very high over my house in Pueblo. They were mostly sailing on outstretched wings, probably hunting for insects. At the same time they were circulating, they were steadily drifting pretty much straight south. To me, it seems a little early for them to be migrating. Any info on this subject would be helpful to me, and I assume to many others.

I've watched the Kites nesting south of Colorado Springs in El Paso County since 2011 and based on my observations of that group this is not an early time for them to leave.  Often, it is the flip of a coin whether or not they will still be around for the Fountain Creek Regional Park fall count which is the second Saturday of September annually.  Some of them have seemed to leave as early as the last week of August or first week of September, but right around mid-September seems to be pretty standard.  There only seem to be a small handful of eBird records for the Front Range from any year past about right now.

“I wish it need not have happened in my time,” said Frodo. “So do I,” said Gandalf, “and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”

Hi Leon, all,

For a little continental perspective:  Mississippi Kites are one of the first species of raptor to pass through the Veracruz (Mexico) River of Raptors fall hawk watch along the Gulf Coast. They are already moving through in good numbers when the hawk watch begins in mid-August.
