Looking for Hepatic Tanager, Santa Clara Creek, Huerfano County, found Great Crested Flycatcher.  Many thanks to Paul and Polly Nelder who met me at Santa Clara Creek Sunday Morning 8:15AM, 14 May 2015.  I had two hopes for my visit to Heurfano County:  Bobolink (got it), and Hepatic Tanager (not so much).  CFO has a good listing for Santa Clara Creek, http://coloradocountybirding.org/BySite.aspx?SiteID=113  This can be an important place because it’s been good for Hepatic Tanager in past years.  Their spring migration should be over by early June, so I was hopeful. We spent about an hour along Rouse Road birding from the road since everything else is private property.  Hepatic Tanager likes to forage high, so that’s where we looked. No calls, no songs, no luck.  After having luck with Bobolink (thanks again to Paul and Polly) I went back to Santa Clara creek at noon and spent 3 hours driving the length of Rouse Road looking high and low.   I did finally get luck with a Great Crested Flycatcher at the creek.  Also have never seen so many Black Headed Grosbeaks…total count was over 50 in 8 miles of driving.  Had blue grosbeak as well.  Rick Taylor, Colorado Springs, El Paso County.
