I birded the USFS Manitou Experimental Forest in Teller County for a bit today and saw and heard a Red Crossbill that sounded very different from the others we were hearing and seeing there and at Manitou Lake.
I'm looking for some guidance on how to determine which type it was. I have a recording and 2 photos. Here is
a link to the checklist with the audio recording captured using Merlin. It was interesting that Merlin thought this one was a Northern Mockingbird, although it ID'd all the other Red Crossbills I saw and heard today as Red Crossbills.
I have Nathan Pieplow's Peterson Field Guide to Bird Sounds. The recording seems closest to Type 4, but not as close as I'd like.
