This, our first day of the 2023 banding season, was something of a mini-day, given continued high lake water, heat and humidity.  We only have the front 11 nets up and the heat and humidity meant we had to close early.  We had a steady stream of birds, mostly (and not surprisingly) Yellow Warblers, from around 6 a.m. when we opened until about 9.  And then nothing.  By 10 it was too hot and muggy to be banding birds (had there been any out and about) so we closed early.

Eighteen of the 25 birds caught were Yellows, but the others were an interesting variety of one-on-a-kinds:

Hammond's Flycatcher 1
Warbling Vireo 1
Rock Wren 1
House Wren 1
Orange-crowned Warbler 1
Virginia's Warbler 1
Yellow Warbler 16 new, 2 banded last year
Northern Waterthrush 1

Looks like the heat will break by Friday, in time for our first opportunity for folks to visit.  We also hope to have a few more nets up.  We are offering one-hour slots (up to 15 visitors at a time) from 7:30-8:30 most weekday mornings (Tues-Fri, we are closed on Mon) and 8, 9 , and 10 a.m. one-hour time slots on the weekends.  Click here to make a reservation.  It is pretty cool to see several fall warblers side-by-side in the hand!
