This one almost looks less “deformed” and more “disfigured” . . . like the lower mandible was broken off.

Here's a Black-capped Chickadee with an Avian Keratin Disorder-caused beak that seems to match the thread, taken at Grandview Cemetery in Fort Collins on 24 October 2011.  I saw this bird off and on for about two weeks before it disappeared.  I once saw it catch what I think was an assassin bug (Zelus sp.).  Apparently the inability of such birds to preen properly is as much a liability as how it might impair food acquisition.  It is easy to see how preening/thermoregulation is critical at times like this current Polar Vortex event.

That occurred to me as well.  The lower mandible does look like part of it snapped off.  I wonder about the length of the upper, though.  Somehow it seems unusually long.
