A bit of Boulder County birding, Oct. 18

Hello, Birders.

Nothing of great significance here, just some notes of local interest. Boulder County, Oct. 18.

Walden Ponds had an animated eastern screech-owl and a glorious sunrise. The Plegadis ibis, reported earlier by Peter Burke and David Waltman, was present. Also at Walden Ponds: 11 wood ducks, my FOS lesser scaup, 3 Virginia rails, 1 greater yellowlegs, 3 great horned owls, a marsh wren singing its head off, an orange-crowned warbler, and a big flight at sunrise of common grackles (at least 1,000). eBird checklist here.

Nearby Teller Lake No. 5 had 70+ American white pelicans and my FOS buffleheads. The weedy fields near the parking area off Valmont Road provided nice comparative studies of lesser goldfinches, American goldfinches, and pine siskins. Gambel white-crowned sparrows were legion, and many were singing. Also at Teller were a few yellow-rumped warblers, a Lincoln sparrow, and a saffron-winged meadowhawk. eBird checklist here.

Back in Lafayette, Hannah Floyd and I saw and heard several flocks of sandhill cranes hurrying south.
